Virginia Emissions Inspection: Which Counties Require It?

Only some parts of Virginia require an emissions test. Here's the full list and how the program works.

Virginia's emissions inspection program only applies to vehicles registered in Northern Virginia: Arlington County, Fairfax County, Loudoun County, Prince William County, Stafford County, and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park.

Vehicles must be tested every two years, generally at the same time as the safety inspection. The maximum fee is $28. Most certified shops handle both inspections in a single visit.

Cars older than 25 model years, brand-new cars in their first four years, motorcycles, and certain alternative-fuel vehicles are exempt from emissions testing.
