Virginia Inspection Sticker Costs & Fees (2026)
Exactly what you'll pay for safety and emissions inspections in Virginia this year — set by state law, not the shop.
Virginia caps inspection prices by statute, so every certified station charges the same: $20 for passenger cars and light trucks, $12 for motorcycles, and $51 for trailers over a certain weight.
Northern Virginia residents (Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, and surrounding cities) also need an emissions inspection every two years. That fee is capped at $28.
Shops cannot legally charge more than these amounts for the inspection itself — but they can quote you separately for repairs needed to pass.
Frequently asked
Is the inspection price the same at every station?
Yes. Virginia state law sets the maximum inspection fee, so all certified stations charge the same flat rate.
Do I tip the inspector?
No — tipping isn't expected for state inspections.
